First time showing maternal feelings or what?

It's very much possible that that is the case, most baby birds are actually very sociable with humans. A little bit ago i rescued 4 baby birds that fell off their nest, they were about 5 days old and they've been loving me as a mother ever since, they fly around the house and fallow me everywhere. In your case i think that the chick might have felt the same thing.
