Who's better at their job; Mike Riley, or, Steve Bennett?

No matter how much I dislike Liverpool, I felt for them this afternoon. Here we have a Latino Player (Mascherano) trying to defend a fellow-Hispanic (Torres.) He is speaking to the Ref, whilst smiling. There appeared to be, neither profanity, nor evil thoughts (i.e., implied violence.) The Referee waves the Liverpool Player away. The Player attempts to communicate one more time. Still with a smile. Referee sends him off. My suggestion being: 1. The Ref was wrong. 2. I applaud the Player (Mascherano) supporting his Team-mate. Not in the manner 'utilised' by Messrs Terry, Drogba and Lampard, but; differently. 3. Was Mr Bennett attempting (at Liverpool's 'expense' - after all, he did kill the game for them) to 'restore' his Fellow Ref's (Mr Riley's) 'credibility' (which, could, currently, be found 'lurking' - 'sub-reptilian' fashion - inside a Piccadilly 'pi$$oir') or was he simply 'doing his job!'
